NORTHWEST OHIO ASSOCIATION

LAY SCHOOL OF RELIGION

Pastors and Christian Educators:

Do you have folks in your congregation who are actively involved in the life of the church and would perhaps like to expand their knowledge about the Christian faith?

Lay Folks:

Do you enjoy being a leader in your congregation? Would you like to know more about the church and the Christian faith?

Then the Lay School of Religion might be the answer you are looking for!

For more than twenty-five years, the Northwest Ohio School of religion has undergirded ministry in all parts of the Association. Informed and trained laity have strengthened the churches and enhanced the quality of spiritual life for all.

The hallmarks of the Lay School of Religion include: quality instruction, Christian fellowship, theological integrity, commitment to the United Church of Christ, and open dialogue.

There are courses offered each Fall and Spring. Each term covers a different topic. Currently classes are offered in preaching, pastoral care/ evangelism/ stewardship, Christian Education, Polity (the organization of the UCC), Liturgy and Worship, survey of the Old & New Testaments, and Theology.

At the present time, there are currently two tracks for the Lay School of Religion. One is for personal enrichment. The other track could lead to the possibility of providing pulpit supply to congregations when the regularly called pastor is on vacation or ill.

Tuition is $40 for each course. In addition to this price, at least one book is normally required.

Classes meet the First and Third Tuesday nights at the Association Office located at 416 Wentz Street in Tiffin, Ohio. Sessions begin at 7:15 p.m. and conclude promptly at 9:30 p.m. The first fifteen minutes is set aside for student-led devotions, business and announcements.

Currently the Faith Formation Team is working on securing a new Dean. Rev. Dan Busch, the Association Minister, will serve as the coordinator for the Fall Session.

Spring 2008 Course:
Evangelism/Stewardship/Pastoral Care
It may seem as though evangelism, stewardship and pastoral care have very little in common, yet
these topics are connected in very real and tangible ways. A variety of learning experiences will be
used as together we study how we can offer effective and meaningful pastoral care to our
congregations. Also exploring stewardship and evangelism; what they mean to us and to the people
we serve. Together we’ll work to find ways that will enrich and empower our congregations and
ourselves.
